If you have a lot of money, one thing is almost certain, you’ll be an art collector. This is true for oil billionaire Bill Koch. He bought Picasso’s La Gommeuse back in 1984 for a paltry $3 million. The rare piece from the ‘blue period’, which depicts a nude cabaret dancer, has increased in value somewhat since then.
The sale, to Swiss dealer Doris Ammann, netted Bill Koch an incredible $67.45 million.
The painting has a fascinating history, in 2000 a reverse side of the painting was discovered in which Picasso painted his roommate Pere Mañach frolicking nude.
That wasn’t Koch’s only sale of the evening, he sold off multiple pieces from his Impressionist and modern art collections and in total brought home $306.7 million. Not bad for a Thursday!
