The  new trailer for Jack Reacher: Never Go Back debuted online this week. It shows Tom Cruise returning as the title character from Lee Child’s series of novels.

The first film came out in 2012. Although it only took in a decent $80 million domestically, the stronger international revenue of $138 million was apparently enough to push Paramount and Skydance to undertake a new film.

The sequel titled “Never Go Back” takes its plot from the 2013 novel, the 18th in the Jack Reacher series.

Edward Zwick, who worked with star Tom Cruise on The Last Samurai, is taking over the directing chair for the sequel. It is a script he co-wrote with Richard Wenk and Marshall Herskovitz.

The official plot synopsis for the film reads:

“Jack Reacher: Never Go Back follows the title character as he returns to Virginia to meet the head of his former unit. But she’s missing, he’s being charged with a crime committed nearly 20 years ago, and he may even have a daughter. Making things right will lead him on a cross-country chase to uncover the truth – and maybe even a family.”

The film also stars Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother, Avengers: Age of Ultron), Danika Yarosh (Heroes Reborn, Shameless), Austin Hebert (Bonnie and Clyde), Patrick Heusinger (Quantum Break, Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce), Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton, A Good Day to Die Hard), Robert Knepper (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Prison Break) and Holt McCallany (Blue Bloods, Gangster Squad).

You can check out the trailer below:

In the preview, a small-town sheriff and his deputy attempt to apprehend the vigilante anti-hero, who stops them with his prepared speech.

‘Three things are going to happen in the next 90 seconds,’ Tom’s Jack explains in a fashion no one uses in real life.

‘First, that phone is going to ring. Second, you’re gonna be wearing these cuffs on your way to prison.’

The trailer shows Reacher going back to his military roots and having to bail out an old friend, played by Cobie Smulders.

“You think you’re above the law,” Tom Cruise hisses at an unnamed bad guy in the trailer, “but I’m not the law, so you should start running, because I’m going to start hunting. And when I find you, I’m going to kill you all.”

Tom Cruise is producing Jack Reacher 2 alongside Don Granger (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Jack Reacher), Skydance Media’s David Ellison and Dana Goldberg (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Geostorm), and Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Valkyrie).

For those wondering, the catchy song in the trailer is “New Blood” by Zayde Wølf. “New Blood” is the lead track the Nashville-based artist’s recently and independently released EP, Rare Breed.

“Never Go Back” hits theaters October 21, 2016.

The action sequel will be part of the busiest movie weekend in recent times, with a total of six new releases hitting theaters.

Going up against Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is Lionsgate’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, Pure Flix’s drama I’m Not Ashamed, 20th Century Fox’s comedy Keeping Up With the Jonses, Focus Features’ A Monster Calls’ and Universal’s horror sequel ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil’.
