The first trailer for the third film in The Purge movie franchise was just released this past Wednesday and it appears that this could be the most intense installment yet.
The Purge; Election year will continue the main premise of the first two films that gave viewers a look at a fictional future in which the government shuts down all emergency services for 12 hours one night a year and deems all crimes legal. Because of that, people are able to murder, steal and set fires without any consequences.
As the past movies have shown, though, not everyone is okay with this system and many people simply barricade themselves indoors, hunkering down and hoping to survive for another year.
The first movie used the “most dangerous game” storyline involving a homeless man who gets trapped inside a rich family’s house, taking place entirely inside a suburban gated community.
Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey battened down the hatches in the 2013 film and the movie ended up making almost $90 million against a relatively tiny budget.
The sequel titled The Purge: Anarchy, took place right in the inner city, and introduced Frank “Crossbones” Grillo.
And now the official synopsis for the third film reads:
“It’s been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn…or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.“
Frank Grillo will reprise his role as Sergeant and he’ll continue to try to protect others from the deadliest night of the year.
Roan is the favorite in the upcoming Presidential election and she wants to put an end to the Purge after her entire family was killed in one of the nights of the Purge 15 years earlier. So the fans of the deadly tradition are going to put their best efforts in order to stop her.
Her security team installs all the trimmings one could need for the night of the purge — a night when troves of people are being sent to take the senator out. But of course in order to have the film someone betrays the Senator, and the purge is already inside.
Once again returning to collaborate with franchise creator James DeMonaco are the series’ producers: Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Insidious and Ouija series, The Visit), Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and writer/director DeMonaco’s longtime production partner, Sébastien K. Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13, Four Lovers).
The Purge:3 hits theaters, fittingly enough, July 4 on this Election Year.
The film also stars Mykelti Williamson, Betty Gabriel, Edwin Hodge, Kyle Secor, Joseph Julian Soria and Liza Colón-Zayas.
