The new official poster for Star Wars The Force Awakens is finally here, debuting only 24 hours before the fans of the franchise can start buying movie tickets for the highly-anticipated seventh installment which hits theaters on December 18.
The news also comes with the announcement that Disney/Lucasfilm is premiering a new full-length trailer during Monday Night Football on ESPN, a channel who is a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company.
The game between the New York Giants versus Philadelphia Eagles in Philadelphia starts at 8:15 p.m. ET, and the trailer will debut during halftime.
The poster features the new characters that have been already revealed such as new bad guy Kylo Ren who is a dark warrior strong with the Force. He was originally a member of the Knights of Ren and a commander of the First Order. Also on the poster is Captain Phasma an officer in the First Order, Poe Dameron a Resistance X-wing pilot, Reya a scavenger on the desert planet Jakku, Finn a redeemed First Order Stormtrooper and Maz Kanatad a space pirate.
Featured on the poster are also classic characters such as Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO. Interesting is the very surprising absence of Luke Skywalker a character that is confirmed to appear in this new installment, ultimately leaving fans to wonder about the presence and fate of the iconic hero in this new series of movies.
The Force Awakens will be the first film in the new planned third Star Wars trilogy announced after Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in October 2012. The story is set approximately 30 years after the events of Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.
The new film will be produced by J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. Along with directing and producing, Abrams also co-wrote the script with Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the original trilogy films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi with George Lucas serving as creative consultant.
The seventh installment in the main Star Wars film series, will include stalwarts Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Max von Sydow.
The Force Awakens is scheduled to be release on December 18, 2015, in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D -more than ten years after the release of the last Star Wars feature film, Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
Movie tickets company Fandango reported last year that the upcoming franchise blockbuster was selected by moviegoers as the most anticipated movie of 2015 with more than 1,000 people surveyed.
Fans will also be able to celebrate the release of The Force Awakens at Walt Disney World in AMC Theatres and Disney Parks. Disney’s Opening Night Event takes place on December 17, where fans will be among the first to see the new film at AMC Disney Springs 24 and then have fun at a private after-hours party at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
