The teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story the first spinoff film in the “Star Wars” film franchise, debuted on ABC’s “Good Morning America” this Thursday.
Rogue One is just the first of several planned spin-off movies, and is said to take place just before the events of the original film.
Although the story is in the same universe of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo. Expect“Rogue One” to be a bit different than the other “Star Wars” film.
The film is described on the official “Star Wars” website as “the story of unlikely heroes who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star.”
“Rogue One” like last year’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” stars another young British actress with Oscar-nominated Felicity Jones (“The Theory of Everything,” “Amazing Spider-Man 2″) — as a Rebel on a mission.
The film also stars Mads Mikkelsen (“Casino Royale,” TV’s “Hannibal”), as well as Donnie Yen, Diego Luna and the Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker.
Although the studio deems it a “teaser”, it’s a full two minute look at the film, which is set to reveal how the Rebel Alliance manages to do the heist that proved central to the events of 1977’s A New Hope.
The trailer starts with hints of John Williams’ famous score, while introducing a war-weary rebellion and Jones’ reckless and aggressive main character.
In it, a group led by Felicity Jones character sets out to steal plans for the Death Star — the same plans, it seems, that Princess Leia stored in the memory banks of R2-D2 back in 1977.
“This is a rebellion, isn’t it?” Jones’ character asks. “I rebel.”
Her character is called Jyn Erso, and fans are already speculating that she could be the mother of Force Awakens heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley), due to the similarities between the determined, dark-haired pair.
We also get a glimpse of some secondary characters, including an Empire general that’s undoubtedly the main villain.
Milk star Diego Luna (who appears to be the Rebellion’s way of partnering her with someone they trust) and Firefly actor Alan Tudyk (who plays a performance capture character – and is very likely that skeletal droid who is seen running alongside them at one point) also star.
There are also some black stormtroopers seen in the trailer who have been commonly referred to as “Shadowtroopers” online by fans, but they will reportedly be called “Death Troopers” in the film.
The trailer also confirmed that rebel leader Mon Mothma, who previously appeared in the Star Wars movies The Return of the Jedi, will be in the film
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters December 18th.
The movie is being directed by Gareth Edwards, who worked on Monsters in 2010 and the Godzilla reboot in 2014.
After that film we are going to get Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII following one year later, a Han Solo spin-off film coming in 2018, and then Episode IX capping off the Skywalker saga in 2019.
There’s also another anthology film scheduled for 2020, though as of yet neither a title nor character has been officially announced.
