The new trailer for ‘Now You See Me 2′ has just been released along with more information about what to expect this second time around.
The first movie was a success story, being a big sleeper hit in the summer of 2013. It grossed $351 million worldwide on a budget of just $75 million.
It was actually Lionsgate’s biggest grossing movie ever that wasn’t a Hunger Games or Twilight Saga franchise entry. So they quickly prepared the follow-up movie.
The official synopsis for the sequel reads:
“THE FOUR HORSEMEN [Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan] return for a second mind-bending adventure, elevating the limits of stage illusion to new heights and taking them around the globe. One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public’s adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, the illusionists resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is none other than WALTER MABRY [Daniel Radcliffe], a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the mastermind behind it all.”
As the newly released trailer embedded below indicates, Lizzy Caplan will be subbing in for Isla Fisher, who had to drop out because of her pregnancy, as one of the three newcomers playing the new character of Lula, along with Chinese singer Jay Chou and Daniel Radcliffe (having Harry Potter joining a movie about magic is a pretty smart casting choice).
As to what makes Lizzy Caplan’s character different than the one played by Isla Fisher, the director told us in an interview with EW:
Completely different. We definitely did not want to tread on Henley territory. She was so great and we loved Henley. Lula is actually a fan of the Horsemen and of the Eye and all these things of what she thinks is true. She has studied them as well. She gets dropped in here as someone who is eager. She doesn’t know how to lie. She just speaks the truth. She loves geek magic, which is basically like bloody, gutsy magic. Her magic is very gross, I guess. It’s very bloody and things are always being cut off.
Mark Ruffalo and Morgan Freeman are also back, playing the parts of ‘Dylan Rhodes’ and ‘Thaddeus Bradley’. And Michael Caine makes a brief appearance in the trailer too.
“Are you listening horsemen?” says Freeman’s character Thaddeus in a prison jumpsuit. “You will get what’s coming to you, in ways you can’t expect.”
With the movie having an impressive cast, I think the only thing to worry is the fact that the film is directed by Jon M. Chu, whose most recent film was one of the biggest flops in movie history, Jem and the Holograms. But hopefully he will do better this time around.
Either way, the studio is so confident about the performance of the sequel that they’ve already given the green light to the third film.
‘Now You See Me 2’, is scheduled for a June 10th, 2016 release.
