One of the most highly anticipated shows of the TV season is finally premiering this week.
Jessica Jones is premiering on Netflix this Friday November 20th, so you can binge watch the entire first season throughout the weekend. #NetFlixandChill.
Of course some of you might be wondering who is this Jessica Jones superhero. Can she live up to the other amazing Marvel series like DAREDEVIL or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Jessica Campbell Jones Cage is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos.
But what makes Jessica Jones a superhero?
Well after coming into contact with experimental chemicals and spending some time in a coma, Jessica emerged with superhuman abilities. She possesses superhuman strength and while its upper limits have never been defined, she has shown herself capable of lifting a two-ton police car with little apparent effort.
Her strength allowed her to lift up a giant-sized Goliath by the nostrils and toss him a short distance, break Atlas’ nose, and render her fellow super-heroine Jessica Drew unconscious with a single punch to the face.
The character of Jessica Jones first appeared in Alias #1 (November 2001) as a former superhero who became the owner and sole employee of Alias Private Investigations. Jones has since starred in two ongoing series (Alias and The Pulse).
Jessica is also able to fly, and while she was able to fly quite well during her early years as a heroine, she has admitted that her flying ability degenerated while she was no longer an active hero. She has since displayed improved flying ability after joining the New Avengers.
Yep that’s right the character is an Avenger in the comics, alongside other well-known members like Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Iron Man and Black Widow. So the series will have some insight about the next Avengers movies.
The show is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise and is the second in a series of shows that will lead up to a Defenders crossover miniseries.
Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that, if the character proves to be popular on Netflix, “It’s quite possible that they could become feature films.”
The new Netflix series stars Krysten Ritter as Jones, and you might remember the actress from the amazing show Breaking Bad in which she played one of Jessie girlfriend’s.
In the show, following a tragic end to her brief superhero career, Jessica Jones tries to rebuild her life as a private investigator, dealing with cases involving people with remarkable abilities in New York City. Mike Colter, Rachael Taylor, Carrie-Anne Moss, and David Tennant also star.
All 13 episodes are set to premiere this Friday and so far critical reception for the series was overwhelmingly positive, with praise being given to Ritter and Tennant for their performances, the series’ noir tone, approach to sexuality, and covering darker topics such as rape, assault, and PTSD.
