The first trailer for the new Marvel superhero film Doctor Strange premiered Tuesday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live and as expected is full of the magical, the mystical, and the strange.
Played by Benedict Cumberbatch, neurosurgeon Stephen Vincent Strange becomes a person with special powers after he embarks on a multi-dimensional quest to fix his injured hands from a previous accident.
That accident costs him the use of the finer motor functions of his hands (you can see them shaking later in the trailer). So he can’t exactly perform brain surgery with shaky hands.
On his journey to recovery he becomes Doctor Strange and ends up serving as Sorcerer Supreme, Earth’s protector against magical and mystical things.
Tilda Swinton’s is seen in the trailer playing the mystical mentor as the actress goes for the full bald look as the Ancient One.
“You’re a man looking at the world through a keyhole,” Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One tells Cumberbatch’s Dr. Stephen Strange in the trailer. “You’ve spent your life trying to widen it. Your work saved the lives of thousands. What if I told you that reality is one of many?”
Also starring are Chiwetel Ejiofor who joins the film as his rival Baron Mordo and Rachel McAdams as presublamy the hero love interest.
“She is someone he connects with at the beginning, and reconnects with, and helps anchor his humanity,” Cumberbatch told Entertainment Weekly in December. As the actor would not confirm or deny that her character is his love interest.
As for Ejiofor character, in the comics, Mordo’s a Transylvanian-born disciple of the Ancient One who turns to evil.
Much of the teaser makes it look like the movie will follow a lot of Strange’s origin story straight out of the comics.
Doctor Strange is part of a new phase of Marvel movies following on from Guardians of the Galaxy and Antman.
The superhero first appeared in the comics issue Strange Tales #110, but he was just this mysterious sorcerer, and no real explanation was given for why he was the Sorcerer Supreme.
Michael Stuhlbarg (Pawn Sacrifice), Scott Adkins (The Bourne Ultimatum), Amy Landecker (“Transparent”), and Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”) also co-star.
Mikkelsen will play the film’s main villain whose name has yet to be revealed, but most fans are betting on the potentially longtime Strange comic-book adversary Dormammu.
Dormammu has been described in the comics as “something worse than a demon”. It is unknown exactly how ancient he is, as he inhabits a wholly alien realm, separate from the rest of the Marvel Universe, that defies the laws of physics as understood on Earth.
The character is an interdimensional entity composed of mystical energy that can be used to achieve almost any effect he desires, including: energy projection; matter manipulation; resizing, teleportation, possession; necromancy; bestowing of power; and creating demon lords.
Doctor Strange opens November 4, 2017 in the U.S, October 27 in Australia and October 28 in the UK
The film is directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver Us From Evil) from a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Passengers) and C. Robert Cargill (Sinister).
