Good news for DC Comics and video game fans all over as the official announcement for the sequel to the 2013 hit video game Injustice has just been revealed along with some very interesting details.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment released the trailer for Injustice 2, the follow-up to the popular NetherRealm Studios developed DC Comics fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us.
The first Injustice: Gods Among Us was released in April 2013, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. With an Ultimate Edition featuring improved visuals and all post-release downloadable content being launched later for PS4.
“In Injustice 2, we are introducing new features that will change the way fans play fighting games,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “We’re always interested in pushing the genre forward and allowing players to customize and level-up their favorite DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains is a significant leap.”
The new game takes place in a world shattered by Superman’s actions in the previous installment, as players will take up the mantle of heroes to rally against newly-included villains.
Ed Boon, the creative director at NetherRealm, said that the team is introducing new features and mechanics in Injustice 2 that will change the way fighting games are played, but did not expand on what those features may be.
Players will also be given the chance to customize every aspect of their character, from appearance to fighting styles, in a variety of different modes being introduced.
Gamers will be able to choose and play from the biggest DC roster ever offered in a fighting game, from classic fan favorites such as Batman, Superman, Supergirl and Aquaman, to astonishing new villains like Atrocitus and Gorilla Grodd. Battles will take place across arenas that have evolved in scale and span across iconic locations such as Metropolis, Gotham City and Atlantis.
The plot synopsis provided by the press release teases a galactic threat coming to Earth, which may explain how Atrocitus becomes involved. We expect Atrocitus will be a vicious opponent who likes to get up close in personal in the game.
“Expanding the DC Universe in games continues to be one of our top priorities, andInjustice 2 showcases amazing gameplay and an original story to bring the characters to life for players,” Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad adds. “NetherRealm Studios is offering fans an experience of customizing and battling with DC’s iconic characters in an entirely new way.”

The animated trailer manages to be even less colorful than the original game. The scene takes place in a dark hallway lit by long fluorescent bulbs. Batman, Superman, Flash, and other heroes pulverize one another.
Injustice 2 will release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2017. Expect to see the gameplay and learn more details at E3 next week.
To celebrate the announcement of Injustice 2, fans who have downloaded the hugely successful Injustice: Gods Among Us mobile game can unlock the Injustice 2 versions of Superman and Aquaman through the in-game Challenge Modes.
