HBO’s ‘Westworld’ series trailer

The first full trailer for the new HBO drama Westworld arrived Sunday night. It appeared just before the penultimate episode of this season of Game of Thrones a.k.a. “Battle of the Bastards”.

Based on a sci-fi movie from 1973 by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park), Westworld follows a group of people in a futuristic theme park called Westworld.

The theme park in the original movie had three sections Medieval World, Roman World, and West World. It showed what happens when the robots go crazy and start killing the park’s visitors.

The new HBO show is produced by JJ Abrams. It is being billed as “a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin.”

The start studded cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Jimmi Simpson, Clifton Collins, Jr., Lili Simmons, Simon Quarterman, and Angela Sarafyan.

“I can say that, if audiences are as excited and titillated and compelled by what they see as we are by what we’re doing, then we’re all going to have a really good time,” actor Jeffrey Wright said to Collider about the series. “I’ve not been a part of something that looks like this, that sounds like this, that explores the ideas that it’s exploring.”

Jonathan Nolan, Interstellar co-writer and brother of Christopher Nolan, will direct and executive produce the series. They are working along with his wife, Lisa Joy.

The network’s description for the show reads:

“The one-hour drama series Westworld (10 episodes) is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin. Set at the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past, it explores a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged.”

The series has been in development since 2013. It promises to be both chilling and provocative. There was some controversy surrounding the show’s production.  Someof the extras had to agree to a contract that mentioned “genital-to-genital touching” because you know it’s not TV it is HBO.

You can watch the first full trailer for Westworld below:

In the first teaser trailer, we get a better glimpse at some of the characters we’ll meet. These include Sir Anthony Hopkins as the creator of Westworld, James Marsden as the new, gunslinging cowboy type. He’s learning the ropes. Then there is Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores Abernathy. She is a resident of Westworld who learns that her entire life is nothing more than a well-constructed lie.

“I think there may be something wrong with this world; something hiding underneath,” says Evan Rachel Wood. Her character Dolores says it towards the end of the trailer before capping with: “These violent delights meet violent ends.”

While Thandie Newton reminds the visitors of the park, “In this world, you can be whoever you want.” Still, her delivery suggests that’s more of a warning than an invitation.

Westworld will premiere in October on HBO.

The series was scheduled to premiere in the first half of this year but was pushed back due to reshoots.
