We have the first teaser trailer for the upcoming sports drama ‘Hands of Stone’, which stars Robert De Niro and Edgar Ramirez (Point Break, Wrath of the Titans, and Deliver Us From Evil) as the trainer/fighter duo Ray Arcel and Roberto Duran, respectively.
Roberto Duran is the famous Panamanian fighter who made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16 year‐old and retired in 2002 at the age of 50.” He earned 103 wins in his career, giving him the nickname Manos de Piedra, or Hands of Stone.
The movie is going to focus on his rise to glory and particularly his fights with champion Sugar Ray Leonard.
In the movie, musician turned actor Usher Raymond IV, stars as Sugar Ray Leonard. This will be the 8-time Grammy-winner’s first leading role in a feature film.
In an interview with Mens Health, Usher shared that he’s been preparing for the role for nearly five years. “I train like an athlete every day, believe it or not… My commitment to this character demands that I not only physically get ready, but also become him… The hair, the personality, the manner he conducts himself in — all that. He’s an incredible man.”
Sugar Ray lost to Duran in 1980 then turned around and beat him five months later in the infamous “No Mas” fight.
Funny enough Duran claims he never said those words and that it was actually the referee who asked it as a question, and Duran who confirmed the sentiment with a hand wave.
However, the proud Panamanian champion was visibly frustrated and was unable to get Leonard against the ropes, a tactic he used to much success in the first fight. Half way into the 8th round Duran suddenly stopped fighting.
Overall, during his career Durán held world titles in four different weight classes: lightweight (1972–79), welterweight (1980), light middleweight (1983–84) and middleweight (1989).
In 2002, Durán was voted by The Ring magazine as the fifth greatest fighter of the last 80 years, while boxing historian Bert Sugar rated him as the eighth greatest fighter of all time. While the Associated Press voted him as the #1 lightweight of the 20th century, with many considering him the greatest lightweight of all time.
Actor Edgar Ramirez told Variety:
“I think it’s a great movie. It not only tells the tale of a legendary Latin American boxer, it also tells the story of a man who became a hero in his country and his region. Panama has somehow always been a country under foreign control, so there’s always been a question of identity. Roberto Duran in many moments, including in some of the most difficult moments in the country’s history, has served as an instrument of unification and celebration of the pride of the country, and that’s is very beautiful.”

Directed, and written by Jonathan Jakubowicz “Hands Of Stone” is scheduled to be released on August 26, 2016, by The Weinstein Company.
The film also stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell (True Blood), Ellen Barkin (Animal Kingdom), John Turturro (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and musician/actor Ruben Blades (Fear the Walking Dead).
Hopefully, ‘Hands of Stone’ will be more like the successful boxing film ‘Creed‘ and less like the not so great ‘SouthPaw‘.
