It’s etched in stone now, Creed was a hit, not only critically acclaimed but a fan favorite as well, bringing in some serious bucks for the nearly 40-year-old Rocky franchise. If you’re a Rocky fanboy like myself, you were thinking sequel when you saw the first Creed trailer on YouTube. If Creed was your first Rocky franchise movie you figured there would be a sequel by the end of the movie.
Well it looks like our suspicions will be coming to fruition and I couldn’t be more pumped. Most are saying that Creed 2 will hit theaters in 2017 which isn’t that long of a wait. It even seems that Creed director Ryan Coogler and Sly Stallone have already started brainstorming ideas for the sequel. One rumored idea that seems far-fetched but that has gained some serious traction is that Creed 2 will take place in the past and we would see Rocky and Apollo back together again.
How they would pull that off is anybody’s guess but Stallone recently told Variety Magazine, “Ryan has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together. Think of ‘The Godfather 2.’ That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious.”
Coogler responded to Variety, “There are no secrets with Sly.” Even the film’s star, Michael B. Jordan chimed in on the idea going back to the past in Creed 2, “So it’s going to be a CGI-version of Sly? I’m trying to think about it. Knowing Ryan, he’ll find a clever way to make that work.”
I’d heard about this idea before this and to this day have no idea how they would swing that but all parties involved seem to be taking the idea seriously. Truthfully, the whole Godfather 2 spin seems very cool and if anything can be said about the Rocky franchise, it’s that they are able to make anything work.
The second rumored plot does seem more likely. Sly recently told Variety, “You’ll have him face a different opponent, which I would say is a more ferocious, big Russian. You can start to meld my experiences and then you start to bring different cultures into it. And you can see what’s happening with the Russians today in America. The complication will come with the girl’s ambition, because she’s not Adrian. She has places to go, things to see, the clock is running on her hearing.”
That sounds like a winner as well. I, like most Rocky fans, would go see Creed 2 even if they changed it from boxing to rugby (though that would be highly disappointing) but it’s feeling like Creed 2 will be a hit. How long can the Rocky franchise possibly last? Keep in mind, I’m not complaining. If you guys have any theories shoot them our way.
