Black Mass: In Theaters

Whitey Bulger is one of the most storied gangsters in the history of the United States. As the head of the Winter Hill Gang, Bulger reigned supreme as the King of South Boston for decades. But his story goes deeper than most gangsters’. It’s rumored that he was experimented on with LSD at Alcatraz while serving a long stretch which according to some left Whitey even more violent and ruthless than he was before he went in. It’s also rumored that he was an informant for the FBI which is what kept him out of jail for all those years and we can’t forget the fact that his brother Billy Bulger is a political player of Kennedy like proportions in Massachusetts. When the heat finally came down, it was alleged that his FBI handler tipped him off and he disappeared. He was gone for sixteen years, four of which he spent on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List behind only one man, Osama Bin Laden. He was captured in 2011 and in true Whitey fashion, drama ensued. He was indicted and then sentenced to 8 years in prison. At 85 years old, who knows if Whitey will make it out?

Whitey is making his voice heard by claiming he never ratted anybody out. Whether that is true or not we’ll never know but this was the perfect buildup for a movie on Whitey and it looks like they’re pulling out all the stops with Black Mass. The biggest draw is that Johnny Depp will be playing James “Whitey” Bulger. He hasn’t done anything serious in a while so people are excited. You’ll notice in the trailer below that the resemblance to Bulger is uncanny which leads me to believe Depp is really committed to the role. It’s not surprising as he is known for really throwing himself into his roles. We also can’t forget that he’s flexed his mafia chops already as Donnie Brasco alongside Al Pacino and absolutely killed it. I’m particularly excited here because in Black Mass he’s playing a criminal and in Donnie Brasco he played a cop playing a criminal, big difference there.

The trailer has been out for months and Oscar talks have already begun so this should be a good one. Another reason why this movie looks so incredible is because it seems they are touching on the nitty gritty of things such as the FBI’s possible involvement in the career of Whitey and even his brother Billy which I imagine can’t be going over well with him given that he’s been a Senator, lawyer, college President, and the list goes on. Excluding these things it would have just made it a glossy mob flick that glorifies the bad guy like Gangster Squad. The supporting cast is strong too and includes Kevin Bacon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Sarsgaard, and Joel Edgerton. A lot of the movie was filmed in different areas of Boston so I have high hopes for authenticity. In a film like this where the location plays such a big part in the story that’s an important aspect. Judging by the cast and the trailers I’m guessing this is going to be a two thumbs up film and those Oscar talks may be warranted.
