Bates Motel season 4 is just around the corner as Vera Farmiga returns once again in her Emmy nominated role as Norma Bates, the mother of one of the most notorious movie killers of all time, the psychopath Norman Bates played by young actor Freddie Highmore.
The series has served as a sort of prequel alternative story to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film Psycho (1960) and comes from writers and executive producers Kerry Ehrin (“Friday Night Lights,” “Parenthood”) and Carlton Cuse (“Lost, “The Strain”).
The upcoming season will continue to showcase Norman’s deranged descent into absolute madness.
The official synopsis for Season four, is:
“This season, Norma becomes increasingly fearful and desperate, going to great lengths to find Norman the professional help he needs. This further complicates their once unbreakable trust, while Norman struggles to maintain his grip on reality. Sheriff Romero once again finds himself drawn back into Norma and Norman’s lives. Will things finally heat up between Norma and the other man in her life? And just how much further will he go to protect her?
A&E announced last year that Bates Motel has been renewed for a fourth and fifth season, so production intends to wrap up the series in Season Five. That said, expect this upcoming season to set everything in motion before the big finale.
So far ratings for the series have remained consistent, with the season two premiere pulling in a series high of three million viewers.
Executive producer Kerry Ehrin revealed details about how Norman is after the season 3’s finale, the producer said straightforwardly that he is a lost cause.
“He’s somebody who’s going in and out of a fictional reality in place in his head, which was originally to help him handle stress,” she explained. “The dissociative disorder that he has is something that people develop from being in trauma as children, and it is literally pulling another person out of you to replace you when you feel overwhelmed by circumstances that you can’t handle.”
Ehrin also disclosed that the imminent Norma Bates death would not be the last viewers will be seeing from the series.
To prepare you for season 4, the network released a 30-second teaser trailer, that shows Norma and Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) staring down the barrel of a gun while screaming to each other in the dark.
The scene then morphed to show a string of pearls, where each piece goes down the drain. As the clip comes to a close, the camera zooms out to reveal blood pouring down a rather spotless white drain.
Fans know that this particular part pays homage to a shower scene in Hitchcock’s iconic 1960 film. For an added creep factor, the whole ordeal is set to an unsettling cover of Diana Ross and the Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go?”
The new season will premiere on Monday, March 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will be followed by the premiere of Damien at 10 p.m on A&E network.
