Amber Heard has just confirmed the news that she is playing the role of Mera, a sea-faring superhero who eventually marries Aquaman.
Mera is the future Queen of Atlantis, and she first appeared in the comics in 1963.
The character will appear in the Justice League: Part One film on November 10, 2017, and then will join Jason Momoa in the James Wan-directed Aquaman movie, coming to theaters on July 27, 2018.
And of course, you are already wondering about the special abilities that make Mera a superhero.
Well, it turns out that she has the unique ability to form “hard water” objects, as well as super strength and powers related to her adaptation to live under water.
Mera has been shown to be powerful enough to control, albeit briefly, huge amounts of water, enough to pull an entire army out to sea. In the comics Mera received extensive training in Xebel, becoming a formidable opponent on her own.
The actress first talked to Entertainment Tonight about the superhero costume preparation for the role.
“It’s interesting. I’m wearing, like, half suit of armor, half scales. It’s strange,” she said of her costume. “But we’re in the process of building it now. It’s coming along.”
Other plot details are of course largely under wraps at this time, so the actress couldn’t talk more about the role.
For those of you unfamiliar with Amber Heard, she might be best known to some for being the wife of actor Johnny Depp. But to be fair she has a pretty impressive career on her own.
This builds up the excitement for the upcoming Justice League to be even more superhero packed. Already cast are actors Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg and Jason Momoa as Aquaman (who is Amber Heard’s future husband in the comics).
The studio is also reportedly developing two scripts for the Aquaman solo movie simultaneously, with Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire) penning one and David Leslie Johnson (Wrath of the Titans, The Conjuring 2) the other. Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder and Zack Snyder are serving as producers.
Justice League part 1 will shoot at the Warner Bros. Leavesden studios in southeast England, as well as various locations around London and in Iceland.
While the film is being designated Part 1, the follow-up installment, which will shoot separately, is already on the studio’s release schedule for 2019, following standalone movies for The Flash and Aquaman (both planned for 2018).
